| On Saturday April 20, 2013 Calvert County's High School Fire Science and EMS Recruit Students, Brad Darmstead (Dunkirk VFD & RS) and Matthew Montgomery (Huntingtown VFD & RS) participated in the Annual Maryland State Firefighting Skills USA Competition in Anne Arundel County.
Both students competed in the Regional Skills USA Competition back in March, 2013 after being selected along with 12 of their peers from Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's County. Students are selected for this competion based on their participation during class, their grades and overall performace in this year long program.
During the regional competition, Brad Darmstead placed 1st place and Matt Montgomery placed 2nd place. Both First and Second place competitors advance to the Maryland State competition which was held on April 20th. Brad and Matt competed with peers from all over the state of Maryland in a physical agility firefighting competition where these students were tested on time it took to don their gear and SCBA, ladder deployment, replacing a burst hoseline, ropes and knot techniques along with having to take an intensive knowledge based written exam on firefighting skills and knowledge.
Calvert County students swept through both the regional and state competition. Matt Montgomery received the 1st place metal and Brad Darmstead received the 2nd place metal. Being selected to participate in this competition is a huge achievement and having both Calvert students take 1st and 2nd place is a great accomplishment for both of them and they should be very proud of themselves as we at Fire-Rescue-EMS are.
1st place competitor Matt Montgomery will now advance to the National Skills USA Competition in Kansas City, Missouri, June 24th - June 28, 2013 to compete against peers from the entire nation.
