Last week, Senior Recruits from the Calvert Career and Technology Academy Fire Sciences Program, spent three days participating in fire drills at the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute (MFRI) Southern Maryland Training Center's Burn Building. This immersive training provided the recruits with the opportunity to put their classroom learning into action in a high-pressure, realistic environment designed to mimic live fire situations.
The Burn Building, a multi-story structure outfitted to simulate various fire emergencies, served as a challenging training ground for the recruits. Under the supervision of experienced instructors, they honed critical firefighting skills, including advancing hoses, conducting search and rescue operations, and effectively extinguishing fires. Live fire simulations added intensity to the drills as the recruits donned full turnout gear and breathing apparatus, entering the building in teams to battle controlled flames and heavy smoke. Instructors emphasized safety protocols and teamwork, reminding the recruits that successful firefighting relies on clear communication and trust.
Over the two days, the recruits displayed significant improvement, building confidence, and refining their techniques. This essential hands-on training ensures that these future first responders are well-prepared to serve and protect their community.
